The Outdoor Product Supply Chain Will Not Return to 2019

By Luvia Outdoor Team · 2022-02-15

Every few months since 2020, someone in the trade has predicted that sourcing conditions will "normalise." As we write this in early 2022, we think it is time to retire that expectation. Not because conditions will stay at crisis levels, but because the structure underneath them has changed, and buyers who plan around the new structure will outperform those waiting for the old one.

What actually moved

Three forces have compounded on outdoor manufacturing in particular:

Raw materials. Aluminium, the backbone of pergolas and quality umbrella frames, traded through extraordinary volatility. London Metal Exchange cash prices climbed from around 1,500 dollars per tonne in mid-2020 to peaks above 3,000 dollars in early 2022, hitting record territory in March. For a product whose frame is most of its material cost, that is not background noise. It is the quotation.

Energy and coatings. Powder coating, the standard outdoor finish, depends on energy-intensive chemistry and curing. Energy cost pressure in manufacturing regions translated directly into finish costs and, at times, into longer coating line queues.

Freight and schedules. Even where rates eased from their extremes, reliability did not return instantly. Rolled bookings, blank sailings and port congestion taught importers to treat shipping dates as ranges, not points.

What changed structurally

Prices may settle. Behaviours will not. Across our conversations with manufacturing partners and buyers alike, three shifts look durable:

  1. Longer planning horizons. Orders that used to be placed six weeks before season are now placed four to six months out, because everyone learned what a capacity scramble costs.
  2. Specification discipline. When materials are expensive, vague specs get expensive faster. Buyers who lock profiles, fabric weights and coating systems early protect themselves from mid-production repricing.
  3. Relationship premium. Factories with full books allocate capacity to customers they trust to confirm and load on schedule. Being a predictable buyer has become a purchasing advantage, not just good manners.

What this means for your sourcing plan

Treat the quotation as a snapshot with an expiry date, and agree validity periods explicitly. Build seasonal plans around confirmed production slots rather than hoped-for ones. And when you compare suppliers, weigh their communication quality as heavily as their price, because in a volatile chain, information is what prevents small problems from becoming container-sized ones.

Our own response has been to publish planning guidance openly, from our aluminium pergola planning checklist to notes on samples and small orders, because we believe informed buyers make better long-term partners.

Practical takeaway

Stop waiting for 2019. Plan further ahead, lock specifications early, and choose suppliers who treat your timeline as their own. Volatility is now a standing condition; preparation is the only durable hedge.
