The finish is a system

A colour swatch tells you how a finish should look; it does not explain how the aluminium was prepared or how the coating suits the environment. For coastal projects, ask for the coating specification, pretreatment information and any relevant test or supplier documentation available for the selected production partner. The correct evidence depends on the product, finish system and distance from marine exposure.

Small details deserve the same attention as large beams. Cut edges, drainage paths, fixings, concealed interfaces and contact between different metals can influence long-term appearance. A sample panel is useful for checking colour and texture under local light, but it should be approved alongside the written finish requirement. That avoids a beautiful sample becoming the only quality reference in the order.

Plan for life after installation

Coastal air leaves salt and grime on outdoor surfaces. Regular fresh-water cleaning and prompt removal of deposits are therefore part of the product plan, not an afterthought. Give the end user a simple care routine and make access to drainage areas possible. If the project is close to surf, industrial fallout or heavy traffic, raise that during specification so the finish discussion reflects the real site.
