Zip Screens or Sliding Panels? Define the Job Before Choosing Pergola Sides

Pergola corner with a partly lowered fabric screen on one side and overlapping timber-slat sliding panels on the adjacent side.

The pavement side and the garden side of a terrace might require entirely different treatments. One is exposed to passing traffic and evening views. The other receives some afternoon sunlight and has a view which guests would like to preserve.

It is aesthetically pleasing to have identical closures on both sides. It might not be a good answer to the brief.

Take one opening at a time. What is wrong there now: low sun, passing views, a draught, or something else? Decide what must change and what should stay open before comparing a screen with a sliding panel.

Start with the opening, not the accessory

A zip screen usually holds fabric in side guides and rolls it up overhead. A sliding panel moves rigid infill along tracks. Those descriptions tell you something about the space each needs. They say nothing by themselves about a particular product's wind limits, rain entry or privacy.

Add the cassette, guides and tracks to the elevation. Show where the panels park when open. Check what hardware remains in view after fabric retracts, and how much room a parked panel takes from the route past the furniture.

Plan the path of the server on a hospitality terrace using a tray. Observe the location of guests' queues and the location of chairs during service. The local designer should check access and escape requirements for the various operating positions. A closure that only works when the terrace is empty has not solved the operating brief.

Privacy changes after dark

Look at the sample after dark as well as during the day. A bright room on one side of the fabric can change what someone on the other side sees. The privacy you liked in a showroom may look quite different with the terrace lights on.

Renson's screen information discusses fabric density and daytime views. That is a reason to test the intended conditions, not evidence that another screen will perform identically.

Look at fabric or panel samples from the street and from a chair in the house. Include evening lighting. In rigid panels, check infill and gaps between panels, “sliding panel” may refer to transparent, translucent or opaque constructions in very different ways.

If a buyer requires privacy during the night, then that should be made clear in the brief. The term “privacy screen” is ambiguous and could be interpreted in a variety of ways.

Be precise about weather

There is a need to unpack the meaning of “Keep the weather out”. Is the buyer referring to less wind, less sun or a table not being hit by wind-driven rain? These are independent requirements.

When making a performance claim, specify the proposed product, dimensions and fixing arrangement. Separate test information from operating instructions. A test on one assembly does not automatically cover a larger opening or a different site exposure.

OBA's wire-guided blind guidance is a useful prompt to read product-specific operating limits. It concerns that blind type, though, and should not be transferred to a zip-retained screen.

Obtain clear answers about edge gaps, rain entry, drainage and unattended operation. If closures alter the enclosure of an appliance, another review should be conducted for cooking and heating. That decision should be made by the applicable manuals and local qualified professionals.

Let maintenance influence the order

A track which is easy to overlook on the rendering may require regular cleaning. Access must be provided to both sides of a panel. There can be different procedures for replacing fabric, guides, locks and motors.

Determine items that can be replaced alone and those that will require access. Then check those tasks against the furniture plan. Repeatedly moving a whole dining section is an operating cost even when the replacement component is inexpensive.

The final comparison should explain why each edge is treated, where the closure parks, which conditions limit the operation and how service is provided. The buyer need not choose one product type for the entire terrace.

A marked-up elevation makes a useful attachment to an enquiry to Luvia Outdoor. Use the add-on options as a starting point, then describe the job at each opening. That gives the sourcing discussion something more useful than a request to reproduce a photograph.
