For years, outdoor kitchens were a project category, not a product category. They were built on site by contractors, from masonry or bespoke stainless fabrication, priced per project and impossible to catalogue. Around 2022 and into 2023, we watched that change from our side of the trade: enquiries for modular outdoor kitchen systems stopped being curiosities and became range-planning conversations.
Three developments made outdoor kitchens importable at scale.
Modular design matured. Manufacturers learned to split an outdoor kitchen into repeatable modules: grill units, sink cabinets, corner units, storage towers. A distributor can now stock modules the way they stock umbrella models, and end customers combine them into L-shapes, islands or straight runs. The product became a system with a configuration logic, which is exactly what trade buyers know how to sell.
Materials settled on weatherproof standards. Powder-coated or stainless cabinet bodies, weather-resistant door panels and standard cut-outs for appliances made the category durable enough to warrant warranties and repeat orders. The same aluminium and coating supply chains that serve pergolas now serve kitchens too, which keeps quality conversations consistent.
The outdoor room idea went mainstream. Consumers in key markets started treating patios as extensions of living space. Industry commentary from hearth and barbecue associations in North America had been tracking rising interest in outdoor cooking for years, and retail assortments followed. Even where exact market figures vary by research house, the direction across all of them was the same: up.
Outdoor kitchens reward careful entry. A few questions we suggest asking any supplier, including us:
Our own work in this category centres on modular systems, which we describe in the Outdoor Kitchens collection and in our planning notes on modular outdoor kitchen range planning.
Outdoor kitchens became a trade category when they became modular, documentable and container-friendly. If you are considering the category, evaluate suppliers on configuration logic and shipping discipline, not only on finish photography.
